Ten-Meter Propagation Beacon History

The N1KXR/B begins test transmissions on 28.280.00 utilizing 5 watts. Reports are coming in from friends around the Western Massachusetts area who are listening to the inaugural transmission.

Frequency coordination is granted with the help of the IARU Region 2 HF Beacon Coordinator, Mr. William (Bill) H. Hays - WJ5O. The beacon moves to 28.289.50, and the output is adjusted to 25 watts.

The first international reception report of the beacon is made. The beacon is reported to have been copied for the first time in Mexico.

The beacon is installed on the mountain in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Full operational testing begins today.

The beacon, while operational, is transmitting a poor signal. I fear the HTX-100 is dying. I'll have to wait for conditions on the mountain to improve before I'll be able to access the transmitter building.

The weather must be playing a factor. We had a heavy snow storm come through the region overnight and into today, the beacon has been reported to have been copied for the first time(s) in Southern Vermont, South Eastern New Hampshire and North Central Connecticut.

After a snowy and wet hike up the mountain to the transmitter site, the HTX-100 has been swapped out. Signal reports from listening stations around Western Massachusetts state that both the signal and the CW tone is much improved.

The beacon is down. Power-lines to the site have snapped under the weight of the wet snow. All mode of transmitters on the site are out of service. This is the first time the beacon has been off the air since it began transmitting from this site.
